Starke




The State of Florida is a state in the southeastern United States. Florida is situated mostly on a large peninsula between the Gulf of Mexico, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Straits of Florida. It extends to the northwest into a panhandle, extending along the northern Gulf of Mexico. Florida's nickname is the Sunshine State but severe weather is a common occurrence in the state. It is bordered on the north by the states of Georgia and Alabama, and on the west, at the end of the panhandle, by Alabama.
 
Starke is a city in Bradford County, Florida, United States. In 2000, the population of the city was 5,593 and an area of 17.2 square kilometers. It is the county seat of Bradford County. Starke is located approximately 8 miles west of Florida's National Guard base, Camp Blanding, and is located approximately 11 miles east and 6 miles south of Florida State Prison, Union Correctional Institution, New River East Correctional Institution, and south of Lawtey Correctional Institution.  
 
In the city the population was spread out with 26.7 percent under the age of 18, 9.7 percent from 18 to 24, 25.1 percent from 25 to 44, 20.3 percent from 45 to 64, and 18.1 percent who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 86.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.1 males.
