Indian River Shores
The State of Florida is a state in the southeastern United States. Florida is situated mostly on a large peninsula between the Gulf of Mexico, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Straits of Florida. It extends to the northwest into a panhandle, extending along the northern Gulf of Mexico. Florida's nickname is the Sunshine State but severe weather is a common occurrence in the state.
Indian River Shores is a town in Indian River County, Florida, United States. The population of the town was 3,448 as of the 2000 census. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 18.5 square kilometers, out of which 13.4 square kilometers of its area is covered by land and 5.1 square kilometers by water.
As of the census of 2000, there were 3,448 people, 1,854 households, and 1,334 families residing in the town. The population density was 257.5 per square kilometers. There were 2,881 housing units at an average density of 215.2 per square kilometers. The racial makeup of the town was 98.72 percent white, 0.12 percent African American, 0.06 percent Native American, 0.67 percent Asian, and 0.44 percent from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.84 percent of the population.
There were 1,854 households out of which 4.6 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them, 70.1 percent were married couples living together, 1.3 percent had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.0 percent were non-families. 26.8 percent of all households were made up of individuals and 20.4 percent had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 1.86 and the average family size was 2.17.
In the town the population was spread out with 4.9 percent under the age of 18, 1.0 percent from 18 to 24, 4.3 percent from 25 to 44, 26.9 percent from 45 to 64, and 62.9 percent who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 69 years. For every 100 females there were 85.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.1 males. Indian River Shores is also said to be as the town of best geographical environment and can trace its origins back to prehistoric times.
