The State of Florida is a state in the southeastern United States. Florida is situated mostly on a large peninsula between the Gulf of Mexico, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Straits of Florida. It extends to the northwest into a panhandle, extending along the northern Gulf of Mexico. Florida's nickname is the Sunshine State but severe weather is a common occurrence in the state. It is bordered on the north by the states of Georgia and Alabama, and on the west, at the end of the panhandle, by Alabama.
 
Fernandina Beach is a city in Nassau County in the state of Florida in the United States of America and on Amelia Island. The area was first inhabited by the Timucuan tribe. Known as the Isle of 8 Flags, it had the following flags flown over it since 1562 France, Spain, Great Britain, Spain, the Patriots of Amelia Island, the Green Cross of Florida, Mexico, the Confederate States of America, and the United States. The population of the city was 10,549 at the 2000 census. As of 2004, the population recorded by the U.S. Census Bureau was 11,241.  According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 27.8 square kilometers all is covered by land area. Density of the city was 379.9 square kilometers.
 
Fernandina Beach is the birthplace of the modern shrimping industry and the shrimp boats depart the docks most days. The oldest saloon in Florida can be found on Center Street. Fort Clinch, a fort built before the Civil War, is open daily and is perfect for a bicycle ride down tree-lined roads, catching the view of a nuclear submarine nosing through the sound, just relaxing on the beach or fishing from the shore or pier.
