Edgewood




The State of Florida is a state in the southeastern United States. Florida is situated mostly on a large peninsula between the Gulf of Mexico, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Straits of Florida. It extends to the northwest into a panhandle, extending along the northern Gulf of Mexico. Florida's nickname is the Sunshine State but severe weather is a common occurrence in the state. It is bordered on the north by the states of Georgia and Alabama, and on the west, at the end of the panhandle, by Alabama.
 
Edgewood is a city in Orange County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,901 at the 2000 census. As of 2004, the population recorded by the U.S. Census Bureau is 2,096. The city has a total area of 3.8 square kilometers.
 
Edgewood is a suburban residential community located between the shores of Lakes Conway, Gatlin, Jennie Jewel, Jessamine and Mary Jess. These are some of Central Florida's most beautiful lakes. The residential areas of the city are located on lands previously used for agriculture. Many fine old oak trees grace the streets of the city lending a quiet elegance to the area. In 1960, Edgewood was declared a bird sanctuary. The first formal census of the town, taken in 1962, showed there were 436 people living in Edgewood. Michael Teague, Mayor.
 
In 1924, the nineteen residents who lived just north of the Pine Castle are met and voted to become an incorporated town. They named the new town Edgewood, possibly because it was a wooded area on the edge of Lake Conway. Edgewood was incorporated on April 24, 1924.In 1960, Edgewood was declared a bird sanctuary. The first formal census of the town, taken in 1962, showed there were 436 people living in Edgewood. The City Charter was submitted to the state in 1969. The same year property on Larue Avenue was purchased and a town hall was built. In 1973, because of the growth in population, the town became the city of Edgewood. At present, the city of Edgewood has approximately 1,900 residents plus a thriving business community along South Orange Avenue.

Like some of its sister municipalities and towns, Edgewood is blessed with beautiful surroundings and a unique natural setting. The picturesque scenery, the majesty of nature, the slow pace of life, and the welcoming nature of its people all combine to make this region one of the most important tourist attractions in Florida.
