Oakland Park

The State of Florida is a state in the southeastern United States. Florida is situated mostly on a large peninsula between the Gulf of Mexico, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Straits of Florida. It extends to the northwest into a panhandle, extending along the northern Gulf of Mexico. Florida's nickname is the Sunshine State but severe weather is a common occurrence in the state. It is bordered on the north by the states of Georgia and Alabama, and on the west, at the end of the panhandle, by Alabama.

Oakland Park is a city in Broward County, Florida, United States. Originally named Floranada, the town was forced into bankruptcy after the hurricane of 1926. When the town reincorporated, residents chose the name Oakland Park. The population was 30,966 at the 2000 census. As of 2004, the population estimated by the U.S. Census Bureau is 31,512.

Oakland Park’s first permanent settlers were the Whidby family, moving from Georgia to South Florida in 1901. By 1918 several other farming families had moved into the area, built permanent homes. In 1923 a Miami land development company initiated the Oakland Park Subdivision with one of the biggest barbecues ever held in Broward County. In early 1925 a group of international investors, primarily European royalty led by the Earl and Countess of Lauderdale, purchased an area which approximates the current size of Oakland Park and incorporated the City of Floranada. Intended to be a resort for rivaling Palm Beach, this vision was carried away with the winds of a hurricane on September 18, 1926. On June 10, 1929 the City was reorganized and reincorporated as Oakland Park.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 17.9 square kilometers. In the city the population was spread out with 20.9 percent under the age of 18, 9.0 percent from 18 to 24, 38.7 percent from 25 to 44, 21.3 percent from 45 to 64, and 10.2 percent who were 65 years of age or older.
